What is the ultimate solution on a painting?
I was thinking about this today. I’ve started a new #commission piece this week in the #Medicine Hat Studio and am now at the pondering stage…I find you need at least a week to ” mull over” how to approach the painting.
It is a field of poppies mixed with an #Albertan #landscape in the distance: the perfect combination for poppy lovers. Although, Alberta does not have many red poppy fields so with the in mind, I combined two photos. One picture is from the #Milk River area of the canola fields and the other is an orange field of poppies. The farm house is red and the poppies are red – imagine that!
Creating the “illusion” of the painting holds my thoughts these days (and nights). How will I apply the paint to communicate what I see to the viewer? Painting is only bits of colour applied as pigment to a surface. Each person perceives what and how you apply this pigment differently. How people read the painting is always surprise to me, they see elements in the painted images I never noticed before.
So these are the questions I ask myself while I am painting:
- What texture will I incorporate? I’m not happy unless I add some grit to the surface! In this field of poppies, I’ve already applied some glass beads in a sweeping directional manner. I hope this will come through to the viewer as movement in the fields.
- How will I add the light? All my paintings are about some sort if light source. God gave us the sun to see nature in all it’s lend our so I place a particular light source as a focus area.
- What colour combination to use? This is more intuitive for me. I like orange and yellow skies with this panel board. I had decided to use three levels of red; Cad Red, Vermillion and Red Deep. Other than these key markers, I haven’t figured out the rest. Green is often a tricky colour for me. I often struggle with the arrangement of green hue as I don’t think it looks natural. I haven’t decided if green will be in the background or if I should use a green-grey shade for the fields. What would you suggest ? So far, seems like complimentary scheme to me, but I’ll let the painting tell me what it needs as I go!
