It is with sadness I view the passing of a Western Canadian art icon.
When I started my art career two years ago, I was introduced to Robert Genn’s work through “the painters key” website. Roberts letters’ were and still will remain a true inspiration of western thought of what it truly takes to be an artist.
His painting techniques, tips on mixing color, and sweeping strokes can be heard through the pages while reading his letters. His humour, notes and entertaining studio games about coping with the every day isolation working in an artist studio often made me chuckle and smile. He had never-ending passion, and a remarkable work ethic.
He has been a distant mentor, philosopher and teacher to many artists around the world.
My thoughts are with his wife, daughter, son, family and recently passed dog, Dorothy – his constant companion in the studio.
His work will live in the hearts, in his paintings and in his letters to art.
“Though shalt love thy work” was his best commandment.

Here’s a tally-ho to Robert. Having a glass of wine in his memory tonight….
