It’s amazing how a sense of place, a memory can evoke such strong associations and emotions.

Most people would look at this painting and think,  huh? For my family and in particular, my sisters, it was a place of refuge. At 8-9 p.m. at night, my sister Val would bundle us up and say “it’s time to go tobogganing.” We thought we were so lucky we had a sister that would take us to go and do such a fun activity. Little did we know at 4 years old that my dad had just come home from the bar and was looking for a fight with anyone around.

The hill still brings back lots of emotions; many happy….including filling and hauling never-ending buckets of warm water from the house across the street to “slick it up” and make our ride super fast.

Looking at it now as a grown adult, it doesn’t look so scary and incredibly steep 🙂
