Lions Park Entrance

Acrylic and mixed media on birch cradleboard

38 x 18″

I have many great childhood memories on every corner of Lions Park. The area presently known as Strathcona consisted then of wild grasses, trees and trodden footpaths.

On Sundays, we had a family tradition to meet one side or the other of our families down at the park. My mom would pack a picnic to have after church. If the other relatives insisted on purchasing supper we would order Kentucky Fried Chicken. (That didn’t happen very often and it was soooooo delicious when we did.) Otherwise, we had hot dogs grilled on the old BBQ stands in the park.

It was real quality time to catch up on the week’s news and to have some laughs. My Auntie Kay was insistent on these family get-togethers. She was a strong and endearing force in our lives. Her influence effected positive change in our home.

It was a time when we could forget our family circumstance, laugh and live in the moment.
