I remember the Pink Lantern as one of the first Chinese-food restaurants in the downtown core. Everyone stopped at the Pink Lantern for Chinese food. Of course, being close to Hat Hardware, it was an easy place to grab a quick buffet. I was in awe of the funny white spoons they would provide for cutlery to eat the soup. Egg rolls were my favorite Chinese food to order at the Pink Lantern until I was older and found out how much fat was in those deep fried rolls of goodness.
The building structure was originally part of the Dominion Block that Marshall-Mitchell Hardware Co. Ltd erected in 1914. The Astra Theatre took over in 1941 with the Pink Lantern Chinese Restaurant taking over the premises in 1970.
